Self-Forgiveness: Giving Yourself a Second Chance
Have you ever thought of forgiving yourself? We all know now that forgiving others is good for us, we’re been taught that way, but have you ever thought of forgiving yourself for the mistakes you made and for the way you are?
Most of us have days of regret in our lives that we want to forget or wish had never happened. This doesn’t only apply to the mistakes you made, but even if others made the mistake, we have this urge to react, take revenge on them, or pity ourselves for acting the way we did. But let me tell you something, these mental models are making you more and more sick to live a full life. This is only ruining your precious life. Then what to do?
This method is mostly known as giving yourself a second chance to live. Why? Because, the happiest person you see in the world doesn’t always make perfect decision, they make more mistakes than anyone else, yet they are still happy. It’s simple, they have this innate nature to forgive themselves and move on. They forgive themselves more than anyone.
No one in this world goes through life making perfect decisions, and no one has the smoothest life. Everyone has problems, everyone goes through dark phases of life, but the trajectory is different for each person and the way they deal with themselves defines them.
When a problem arises and you start troubling yourself over what you did instead of making a different decision, the analogy is simple, at the time, you didn’t know this was going to happen. No one can predict the future or no one can control the present situation that’s troubling you.
Let’s understand how to self-forgive yourself.
1. Understand first what mistakes you did or what exactly happened that led you to this situation.
2. Extract the lessons from it,
3. Stop rumination the incident in your mind. Gently pull back in case you are doing so.
4. Accept what happened and move on. Remind yourself that making mistakes are normal and you deserve the same love and care as you would give it to friend.
This quality of self-forgiveness will help you to move ahead in your life, so you are no longer bound to your past incidents. We are not trying to forget here; we are learning the lesson from it. Until we learn the lesson, the pattern will repeat again and again.
